Many will
find that Wintergreen is an excellent "home base" from which
to visit other attractions in while on vacation in Virginia. While our
family enjoys wandering the rockfish and shenandoah valleys in search
of the best undiscovered breakfast joint, you may prefer visiting many
of the historical sites. We've tried to list some of the major attractions
below. Brochures and directions are in plentiful supply everywhere in
town.
Within
15 Miles of our vacation rental The
Blue Ridge Parkway: Just one mile west of the Wintergreen entrance,
the Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469 mile recreational motor road that connects
Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks while protecting
the cultural and natural features of the Virginia region. Designed as
a "scenic drive", the Parkway provides a vacation in itself--both
stunning scenery and close-up looks at the natural and cultural history
of the mountains. To the north, past Raven's Roost, and Humpback Rocks,
the road changes into Skyline Drive. Skyline Drive has a toll, and the
BRP is free.
Getting
there on bicycle can be faster than getting there in a car. Some of
the Wintergreen homes back up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Simply ride
down Laurel Springs Drive to the point that you see the Parkway through
the lots on your left. Walk your bike over and begin enjoying the view.
Bike rentals are available at the resort.
Lake
Monocan: Part of the Wintergreen resort, but located in the valley,
and its free for Wintergreen guests. Nice beach.
Sherando
Lake: Sherando Lake Recreation Area, part of the George Washington
National Forest, is located east of Staunton at the foot of the Blue
Ridge Mountains, onVirginia Route 664. It offers vacation opportunities
for fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, swimming and boating. Its main,
24-acre lake has a 200-yard beach and a bathhouse at its swimming section.
Crabtree
Falls: This is my wife's favorite. Crabtree Falls is the largest
vertical drop waterfall east of the Mississippi River. Hikers, backpackers
and campers enjoy miles of nature trails in the falls area. The trails
of the falls lead hikers up to where the trail meets the Appalachian
Trail. The falls trails lead hikers along a rigorous five-mile loop
which offers stunning views of the five cascades of Crabtree Falls.
The vertical drop totals over 1,500 feet! Go south on 151 about 15 miles
from the Wintergreen entrance, then left at the signs.
Farther
to the South Natural
Bridge: Nestled between the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Mountain ranges
in the Southern Shenandoah Valley, Natural Bridge provides a unique,
historic, picturesque and natural experience. 215 feet tall, 90 feet
wide, and estimated to be over 100 million years old.
Appomattox
Court House National Historical Park: Where Robert E. Lee surrendered
his men to Ulysses Grant on April 9, 1865. The National Park encompasses
approximately 1800 acres of rolling hills in rural central Virginia.
The site includes the McLean home (surrender site) and the village of
Appomattox Court House, Virginia. There are twenty seven original 19th
century structures on the site.
Farther
to the North University
of Virginia/Charlottesville: 45 minutes away. Montpelier: Home of James Madison. 2 hours away. Washington DC: 3 hours away.
Farther
to the East Michie Tavern: 45 minutes away, this landmark has welcomed Virginia
travelers for more than 200 years. Much like the 18th-century visitor,
you will be enjoying southern fare based on recipes from the period.
After touring the Tavern, guests may continue their tour through various
outbuildings and then down a winding path through the woods which leads
to the Meadow Run Mill and general store.
Monticello:
Home of Thomas Jefferson, 45 minutes away. Ash Lawn: Home of James Monroe, 45 minutes away. Richmond: 2 hours away. Williamsburg, College of William & Mary, Busch Gardens: 3
hours away. Virginia Beach & The Atlantic Shore: 4 hours away.
